Chapter 7

“I understand, Megan,” The police officer repeated, nodding and making eye contact as if he were trying really hard to get his point across. The red and blue lights of his police car blazed around them, flashing in through the windows and out along the trees where they lit up the rope still hanging there. “We’re taking this very seriously, I assure you. But when you start telling me about ghosts and stories, I begin to wonder if someone is just having fun with you.” He eyed her as if he were steadying something about to tip. “Have you told many people about these stories you’ve heard?”

Megan felt her cheeks warm. “Yes, but only a few friends.”

“Anyone else?” One of his black eyebrows lifted. “A stranger maybe? Or could someone have been listening in on your conversation?”

“Well,” She sighed, irritated but suddenly feeling foolish. “There was the bartender at the burger place on the boardwalk. I talked to him and there was someone next to me. A woman, I think, but I didn’t get a good look at her. Why would someone do this just to scare me?” She tossed her hands in the air, exasperated. It made no sense.

The police officer shook his head. “You’d be surprised what some people think of as fun, especially after a few drinks.”

Megan sighed, crossing her arms around herself and glancing out at the forest again. She considered his words, but something still dug at her middle, sinking into her stomach. “I really don’t think that’s what happened.” Her voice was quieter than it had been and when she looked back at the officer. He gazed into her eyes as if he could see her fears clearly for the first time.

He sighed heavily. “Why don’t you lock up and try to get some sleep. I’ll stay out here in my car while I write up the report and make some phone calls.” He set his hand on her shoulder and a smile lifted his stern mouth briefly. “You’re safe, okay?”

“Okay,” Megan felt such a powerful wave of gratitude that her throat tightened with emotion. “Thank you.”

“My pleasure,” He nodded and left, closing the door softly behind him. The sound of his boots on the deck was a comfort. When the red and blue lights stopped flashing, her body stilled for the first time that night. Fear had trembled through her for so long that it left her exhausted. She locked the door and punched in the alarm code, glancing at Fred asleep on the rug as she hurried to take a hot shower.

When she was dressed, and just before climbing into bed, she glanced out the window again to see the patrol car still there. With a sigh, she pulled the blankets around her and sunk into the pillows.

The morning came as always, cheerful and safe. Why did her fears have to be so real at night and then disappear like ninjas in the daylight? She looked out the window to find the patrol car had gone.
